Spring 2006

He who has gold, makes and accomplishes whatever he wishes in the world and finally uses it to send souls to paradise.
-Christopher Columbus

Greetings from Our Beautiful Paradise: What a great start to the New Year of 2006. Guests enjoyed a fabulous New Year’s Eve party at the Club, with our new Executive Chef, Charles Edden heading up our culinary team. Chef Edden joined the Club’s team on November 28th and comes to us from the Old Fort Bay Club in Lyford Cay. Prior to being at Old Fort Bay, he was at the Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island and has also trained in Europe. Chef Edden enjoys working with tropical ingredients, while bringing new recipes to the Club’s already renowned repertoire of classic dishes.

The Annual New Year’s Day Junkanoo Parade was held on Monday January 2 nd, and enjoyed by hundreds from all over. Costumes were none other than spectacular, with their vibrant colours and creative designs. For those of you who have never had the opportunity of seeing this amazing display of art and culture, you can experience performances by the group at the Club on Saturdays at 6:30 & 9:00pm March through August.

Congratulations to our Cacique Award Winner – Ray Lowe! Ray won the prestigious award in the category of “Supervisor of the Year. As quoted by Ray “It was the best time of my life”. Ray will now have the opportunity to compete in the Caribbean Hotel Association Awards, which recognizes outstanding performers from the Hotel Associations throughout the entire Caribbean. Once again, we will all be routing for Ray – he is definitely well deserving! The Lowe Family has actually made history on the Island. Ray’s Uncle, Artist Alton Lowe won the first award in the Arts category in 1999, and Ray’s father, Vertrum Lowe, won the award in the Handicraft category in 2003 for his fine craftsmanship of native sloops. I’m sure there will be more stories to come on this family’s talent.

Congratulations again to Leanne Russell on her accomplishment as being named a Cacique finalist. Long time Bahamian Musician Ronnie Butler was the winner in this category of Creative Arts. Leanne continues to produce exquisite works of art and I have no doubt that Leanne’s name will one day be synonymous with her mentoring artist, Brent Malone.

Congratulations also go out to Brendal Stevens of Brendal’s Dive Shop for winning the Sustainable Tourism award and to Mr. Floyd Lowe, owner of the Green Turtle Ferry Service for the Transportation Award. Green Turtle Cay is very proud to have captured three Cacique Awards for 2005! The Cacique Awards show is dubbed “The Bahamian Oscars” and it was truly a night of fantastic entertainment. The first award of the evening was won by Mr. Floyd Lowe, represented by his son, Nigel; so needless to say, it was a great start to a fun filled, star studded evening.

The Island Roots Heritage Festival held their annual Wine Tasting Fundraiser at the Club on January 21 st. What an amazing night! Approximately 300 persons attended the function and were entertained by well renowned Bahamian artists: “The Brilanders”. The event was sponsored by Bristol Wines & Spirits. Start making your plans now to attend the 3rd Annual Island Roots Heritage Festival scheduled for May 5th-7th.

The Club hosted the 2nd Annual Green Turtle Fireman’s Ball on February 25 th. This too was a fun filled evening with Fireman Chief Junior Roberts heading up the entertainment with a performance by “The Village People” – Junior was the “Construction Worker”! Kevin McIntosh AKA “Island Spice” entertained guests with his repertoire of Island Music along with Junior’s brother Billy singing his Country favorites and upcoming star - 13 year old, Avery Thompson from Marsh Harbour.

The Green Turtle Club was happy to sponsor the 1 st Annual Amy Roberts Primary School Road Race held on February 25 th. The Amy Roberts School is very fortunate to have renowned Phys-Ed Coach Vogal Williams working with the students on the island. Mr. Williams states that we definitely have future Golden Girls and Boys potential on our little island. Watch out for the big names of our future Olympians!

Green Turtle Club has implemented a “Beach Beautification” campaign in an effort to keep our beaches free of trash drifting onshore. In addition to an initial clean-up of the trash on the ocean beach, the Club has placed trash bins along the beach in hopes that visitors and locals enjoying the beach will help in this process.

In our continuing efforts to beautify the resort – the Club has just completed another phase of our landscaping project. – We can’t wait for you to see it. We are sure that you will notice the changes that we are making.

Within the next week, the entrance channel into White Sound will be properly marked with green and red buoys. The controlling depth at low tide is still at 4 ½ feet however we are still in hopes to have the channel dredged in the future. Our newly appointed dock master, Justin Heild, awaits your arrival!

In our last issue we mentioned the upcoming show of “George Poveromo’s World of Saltwater Fishing”. The show will air on ESPN 2 on the following dates: March 26 th at 8:30am, April 1 st at 6:00am and April 2nd at 6:30am.

Thank you to all of our return visitors and to those of you that may be considering a trip to Green Turtle, your Island Paradise awaits you.

Sincere regards,
Lynn Johnson – General Manager
